How do I Price a logo??

After absolute confusion I see when it comes pricing a logo creation. Searching dozens of logo web pages gave more confusion than information i got. I have created this page about my experiences in pricing a logo.

A professional logo design price is based on the following:
1. Designers experience.
2. Company’s size and budget range.
3. Logo usage

The above three criteria give me a rough idea about type of logo I have to give.

Another factor plays a vital role in designing the price. That is logo type. Basically there are 4 types in logos which I have mentioned below

Wordmark Logo
These logos are the most popular and have very little or no graphical content. Wordmarks are essentially a typographical treatment of the brand, business or product name.
Lettermark Logo
Lettermarks are very similar to wordmarks but use an abbreviation.
Symbol Logo
These logos use an abstract symbol to reflect your product, service or business.
Graphic Logo
Graphic logos use and image which clearly illustrates what your business does.

Now these are my thoughts on the subject ‘how' you should look for an online logo designer.

Good news is
, you will find - logo designs under 5000Rs! I've seen 4000Rs logo designs, 3000Rs logo designs, 1000Rs logo designs and even lower! You will find a lot variety of prices for logo designing on the Internet.

Bad news is, be careful of cheap logo design offers and be sure and check out the designers’ portfolio. Some designers use clip art. Logos that include a royalty free piece of clip art will be copyright free. Any logo design company can use the same clip art as part of their logo. And don’t you feel a 1000Rs logo will be all same for many clients?

Here comes an interesting part, some logo designers charge a flat fee for a logo without asking any questions. How would it be if TATA purchase a logo for 1000Rs? Good deal right! Or how about a ding dong foot wears shop paying 50,000Rs for a logo. Here comes the budget! Every company is different in size, vision, budget and scope.

Wait there is more confusion. Additional costs for extra colors, extra modifications and extra preliminary designs are charged by some. Switch on your calculator out just to figure the final cost of your logo. You will be confused in knowing what you are paying for.

So how much should a logo cost in general?
How much is a logo design really worth? Ask TATA, WIPRO, SATAM, MICROSOFT, DELL or any other company which treats its logo as their first spokesman. All companies may not be as large as these but every company should have a logo that is easy to identify and speaks about the company.

After saying all this, don’t you think a logo is more worth than just time involved in designing it? Professional graphic design prices range anywhere from 1,200Rs to 3000Rs per hour. When see a logo design priced at 5,000Rs and the designer charges 2,000Rs per hour for work, do you think that he has spent only2.5 hours on your logo?

That price would include the time spent to contact you, the understanding your company requirements and competition, the initial ideas, the enhancements, finalizing the logo, the preparing files for each format, sending logo and billing. So just assume, much time is actually spent in designing a logo?

I have to conclude that a logo is more valuable to a company than a standard graphic, so the price depends on the added value. Lot of graphic designers would be compelled to design a top notch logo for under 6,000Rs. So beware of logos you get for less than 6,000Rs, you get what you pay for.

Added charges
My personal feeling is, the cost of a professionally designed logo doesn’t depend on the list below. All these are a part of logo design and a separate charge for them is un-necessary.

Enhancements – There will be no need for major changes during the creation of a logo design if questions asked initially are good enough to understand the clients’ requirements. Good communication helps the logo designer understand your need exactly and your logo will be talking about your business.

Added Colors - Printers will have problems with extra colors and they obviously charge more for more colors. But a designer should not charge more for extra colors, I think. It’s just a click of a mouse to add an extra color.

Initial Designs - A few options is good, to many options will spoil. A professional graphic designer should decide for you the correct amount of initial designs required to create a perfect logo. Some where around 3, 4, 5 in general.

Now about clients, there are 2 basic kinds of clients. Some clients will need zero changes while others may request ten.

Now the biggest question is, time spent on each design. If you don't like your first two or three designs you can easily request two or three more.
